The characters in the classic novel "The Scarlet Letter" that I have read so far are Hester Prynne, who is the main character and the story revolves around her. There is Pearl, who is the daughter of Hester Prynne. There is The Reverend Mr. Arthur Dimmesdale, who is the priest and there is Mr. Roger Chillingworth is a physician in the town. There are also the townspeople, who gossip about Hester Prynne and her wrong doings. My first impression of Hester Prynne is that she is a quiet person, who cares about her child. She’s very religious meaning that she believes in God a lot. But at times she is very secretive, meaning she didn’t tell anyone who raped her, and she’s the type that keeps all her problems to herself.

My first impression of Pearl is that she’s a lively, bubbly child, who doesn’t care what other people think about her. She won’t back down from others, like in the novel, there were people making fun of her and she stood her ground. She threw rocks at the people and screamed at them. My first impression of Arthur Dimmesdale is that he’s more of a depressed person. He’s always feeling jumpy and nervous, like someone is going to come after him. I think there’s something more about him that he’s hiding. My first impression of Roger Chillingworth is that he’s a caring person; he cares about Hester and wants to find out who raped her. I wonder if there is any other motive for him for asking this or is he just plain curious.

The setting of the classic novel "The Scarlet Letter" is that it takes place in Boston, England. The setting also goes into the cabin, where Hester and Pearl stay, the jailhouse, and the village. The overall tone of the novel so far that I have read is it’s very formal, and it’s from third person. It could also be from the author’s perspective. This is my first impression of the novel "The Scarlet Letter" so far.

The book scarlet letter starts off in Boston in front of a Jail cell where most people in the town are gathered to see Hester Prynne, who is about to get convicted for having sexual intercourse with another man. Most people in the town do not know that she is already married they believe that she had intercourse before marriage and that she should get punished severely for this crime. The new characters that were introduced in the first 10 chapters of this book are Hester Prynne, who is one of the main characters, the reverend, pearl, and Roger Chillingworth.
The first impression of Hester I got was that she was a very free, uncaring woman, who is strong on her feet and understands herself. She doesn’t show what emotions that she feels she keeps them inside of herself. She is a very independent woman who can depend on her self. She may seem like she doesn’t care about anything but inside she hurting, she does regret what she has done but she doesn’t show it. She is a very independent woman. The reverend, my first impression of him was that he is a quiet person, because he doesn’t talk a lot, also I think he might secretly adore Hester because he supported her when the other people where trying to snatch her child from her, and it seemed he might some what like her. Roger Chillingworth I believe is a mysterious man, but a caring one because he seemed genuinely concerned for her safety and her child too. But he also seems cruel or light hearted because he tell her to reveal that he is her husband, no one knows what his motives are, and what he plans to do with Hester. I think that there is another side to him, because at the end he tells Hester Not thy soul, no not thine.
The book so far is going smoothly and I like it, the way that the author has opened and introduced the book; it makes you wonder why everyone is standing outside of a prison, and captivates your interest and wants you read more. The tone the book starts off with an mysterious, unsteady and curious, tone which only wants the readers to read it farther.
The setting, the characters and the tone of this book is interesting, captivating and wants you to continue to read this book even more. Overall this book has a great attractive starting, and it captivates the reader’s interests. This is my first impression of the book scarlet letter.

From reading the first few chapters of scarlet letter it is evident that the main themes throughout this book will be the how the public of new england looked at intercourse before marriage at that time period, sin, and reconciliation with god and self. The main character that the story line revolves around is a young girl, named Hester Prynne. The problem that Hester is facing is that she had intercourse before marriage and now is being punished for the sin she committed. Her punishment is to wear a scarlet letter "A" on her chest which portrays her sin. By wearing this letter, the public gossips and judges Hester for the mistake she made.

My first impression of Hester is that she is a very strong-willed and confident person. She believes in herself and does not judge herself for what she did. She also, does not let the judgemental population of New England affect the way she acts and feels about herself. However, as well as having a strong side, she also has a very soft and emotional times. Hester has a personality where she keeps things to herself, so int he end, she ends up breaking down because she can not handle all the pressure and the scrutiny of the public and her own family. Another character who is introduced so far in this novel is Reverend Dimmesdale who tries to question Hester about who is the father of her daughter, Pearl. My first impression of the Reverend is that he is a very judgemental person who has a strong belief in his faith. Because of this, he does not show any sympathy towards Hester, and instead makes her feel bad about herself. The person that he reverend calls in to try and talk to Hester is a doctor named, doctor Gillingham. This doctor is more understanding and compassionate. He tries to understand what Hester is going through and tries to help her one step at a time instead of jumping to conclusions.

Hester's daughter is Pearl. My first impression of Pearl is that she is a very care free baby growing up in a society that scrutinizes women immensely. Since Pearl is so little she is oblivious to the struggles that her mother is going through. However, i think Pearl is aware of her surroundings and the fact that she is growing up in a prison cell and then a cabin out in the woods, away from the public eye.

  4. As far as I have read the book “The Scarlet Letter” my first impression is that the story is taking place in Boston, New England in front a prison. Later in the town of Boston.
The characters in the book are: Hester Prynne the main character, Pearl- daughter of Hester, Mr. Arthur Dimmesdale who is the Priest, lastly we have Roger Chillingworth who is a doctor. My first impression of Hester Prynne is that she is very brave because in order for her daughter to have a life she is working as a sewer, making clothes and helping with charities to bring some money into the house for food and other necessities . Hester is a very quiet person because she was asked to reveal the person who has made her do the sin but to respect his privacy and to save his life she does not mention the person’s name. Hester is a very truthful person because she is accepting the punishment that she deserves from the government for the sin she has made.
Pearl who is Hester’s’ daughter she is a symbol of Hester’s sin. But Hester does not treat Pearl as a stranger, or ever curse her she takes very good care by teaching her between good and bad. Pearl is not a very outgoing person because she does not prefer having any friends, but if someone does teases her or her mother then she stands up. There are times when Pearl does not stand up for herself or her mother because she does not care about what people is saying. Pearl’s best friend is her mother wherever her mother goes she is always with her.
Not much has been described about Mr. Arthur Dimmesdale until what I have heard but I can say that Mr.Dimmesdale is a very depressed person. Like any other doctor Roger Chillingworth is a very caring person he cares a lot about everyone especially Hester and Pearl. Other supporting characters were the neighbors who came outside of the prison to see Hester with the symbol that she was given due to her sin. The subject of the book is making a sin because someone forced Hester to commit the sin getting punished for it. How sometimes sins can make you regret on what you did. This is my first impression on the book so far.
