The first section of the novel, "The Scarlet Letter", takes place in a prison cell where Hester Prynne, the main character, is being kept. This prison cells seems like a very dark and gloomy place filled with sadness and the anger of people. This is evident on page 55 where it states:

" A throng of bearded men, in sad-colored garments and gray, steeple-crowned hats, intermixed with women, some wearing hoods, and others bareheaded, was assembled in front of a wooden edifice, the door of which was heavily timbered with oak and studded iron spikes."

The huge timber door with spikes symbolizes how trapped these people are and the spikes of the door symbolizes the containment of evil. Also, it portrays that the prisoners have no freedom to the outside world as they are trapped day in and day out inside the prison.

On page 56 it also states: "...pigweed, apple peru, and such unsightly vegetation, which evidently found something congenial in the soil that had so early borne the black flower of civilized society, a prison." The element of this line, "the black flower of a civilized society", symbolizes how these people in prison are looked down on by the society and the public. They are classified as the :black flower: which means the lower class, or the wrong-doers on society. This shows how the public of New England may be very judgemental and make very rash decisions when it comes to deciphering right from wrong.

In conclusion, the reader is is introduced to the life of the prisoners and the condition of what the prison looks like. They also get the image of how critical the public is and how scrutinized people are at this time period.
