The literary devices that are used in the book, “The Scarlet Letter”, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, are various. There are various themes throughout the book, like overcoming obstacles, the fight for love, and the battle with friendship. The letter A is seen throughout the book and has different meanings for each person. It could mean “authority” or “angel” or “able” or “art” or “American”. For example, the government wanted Hester to wear the “A” as a symbol of shame, but Hester believes that it’s a work of art. In Chapter 15, Pearl makes an “A” out of seaweed; this shows the symbol of nature, as Hester believes nature is divine. The prison grounds are another of the author’s symbols from the book. People think of prison as a gloomy place, but in the book, Nathaniel Hawthorne, makes it a happy place. There is a rosebush that gives the prison a colour and a sense of hope. The rosebush is also growing wildly so this represents that not all prisoners will be tame, but some will be wild with hope. The scaffold is the place where we meet our characters, where the climax is happening, and where the novel slowly drifts off into an end. It represents judgement, because a lot of the judgement is taking place at the scaffold. In chapter 23, page 305, the townspeople are judged by the sinners. These various symbols give a deeper understanding of the story. They help you understand what is behind, and the author makes it up to you to decide what each symbol means. It’s all based on how you interpret each of the sumbols.
